multi-store memory model Flashcards
(24 cards)
Who designed the MSM?
Attkinson and Shiffrin
What does the MSM suggest?
Memory is made up of 3 stores
What does the sensory store do?
processes stimuli from the environment to the senses
What is the iconic duration of the sensory store?
0.2s
What is the duration of the auditory/echoic store?
2-4 seconds
What is the capacity of the sensory store?
Large
(there’s 100million cells in retina of each eye)
How does the sensory memory encode?
converts information from environment into a form which it can be processed
What is the short-term memory store?
Temporary memory store typically for immediate use
What is the duration of STM?
brief (18-30s)
How can we keep info to pass it into the LTM?
through active rehearsal
What is the capacity of STM?
Limited, Millers magic number 7 +/- 2- new info replaces old info
How does the STM encode?
Acoustically
What is the Long term memory store?
Potentially permanent + unlimited store of information
What is the duration of the LTM?
Potentially limited / never forgotten (minutes - lifetime)
What is the capacity of the LTM?
Potentially unlimited- if you forget info you may have access to it but only with certain cues
How does the LTM encode?
Semantically
How does the Glantiz + Cuntiz (1966) research add credibility to the MSM?
(C.o.d.a)
Shows how memories are displaced from STM when they exceed the capacity - 7+/-2 chunks
How does the Peterson & Peterson (1959) research add credibility to the MSM?
(C.o.d.a)
Research shows info in the STM is lost after 18 seconds if not rehearsed - STM is a temporary store
How does the MSM have face validity?
(C.o.d.a)
Describes what memory feels like
How does the Shallice & Warrington (1970) research oppose the MSM?
(c.O.d.a)
a victim of a motorbike accident had damaged STM but could still add to their LTM which supports the WMM
What other opposition is there to the MSM?
(c.O.d.a)
The model is based on artificial lab experiments
What is a different theory to explain memory?
(c.o.D.a)
Working memory model- challenges idea that STM is a single store, theorises STM is made up of multiple components
How can the MSM be applied to education?
(c.o.d.A)
help improve students revision and rehearsal in teaching (getting STM into LTM)
How can the MSM be applied to dementia?
(c.o.d.A)
memory aid- people with dementia can chunk information together to overcome limited capacity of the STM
