cognitive key question Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is the key question?
“how can knowledge of working memory be used to inform the treatment of dyslexia?”
what is the AO1 for the first paragraph?
Definition of dyslexia
define dyslexia
a specific learning difficulty which primarily affects reading + writing skills
what 5 things might people who have dyslexia struggle with?
- processing and remembering info they see and & hear which can affect literacy skills
- can also impact other areas such as organisation skills
- carrying out a sequence of directions or struggling to learn sequences
- poor handwriting
- problems copying written language
what percentage of the population are affected by dyslexia?
10%
What is the AO2 for the first paragraph?
how it affects learning
what would you discuss for the AO2 of paragraph 1?
short attention span due to an impairment in the central executive
CE decides where the sensory memories are stored and has a very limited processing capacity + doesn’t store info
it directs attention and gives priority to particular activities and enables the working memory system to selectively attend to stimuli and ignore others
What is the AO1 for the 2nd paragraph?
Phonological loop (working memory)
it processes and temporarily stores auditory + verbal information
it holds memory or sound and voices info you’re rehearsing
A shorter PL span than normal (2s) would explain kids with dyslexia and middle up similar sounds
What is the AO2 for the 2nd paragraph?
Sebastian and Hernández-Gil
aimed to investigate development of PL by using a verbal digit span task or 3 sequences with 3 numbers increasing by 1 each time and concluded a shorted digit span is associated with dyslexia
therefore digit spans can be used to test for dyslexia in young children
What is the AO1 for the third paragraph?
Strategies used in classrooms for kids with dyslexia
avoiding asking kids to read aloud
simplifying and numbering instructions into chunks (WMM)
highlighting and colour coding info
