(8 cards)
Internal validity
A characteristic of a study, indicating that it measure what it purports to measure because it has controlled for confounds (159)
External validity
A characteristic of a study, indicating that the results generalize from the sample to the population from which it was drawn and from the conditions used in the study to relevant conditions outside the study (159)
What does it mean to have a quasi-experimental design?
When you can’t actually randomly select or randomly assign: like if you’re experimenting with people with a certain disease: you have to pick from the population that already has the disease, because you can’t assign people to have the disease (159)
Does correlation imply causation?
No, silly, didn’t you learn that last year?
Epidemiology
A type of correlational research that investigates the rate of occurrence, the possible causes and risk factors, and the course of diseases or disorders (162)
What is attrition?
The reduction in number of participants during a research study
What is a common factor?
A helpful aspect of therapy shared by pretty much all types of psychotherapy, like talking out problems
List some common factors.
Expressing problems, explanation and understanding of problems, support, hope, feedback, advice, etc.
