coastal systems -geomorphological processes (marine processes -transportation and deposition) Flashcards
how is sediment transported at the coast?
.Longshore drift
what is Longshore drift?
.the net zigzag movement of sediment up and down the beach
how does Longshore drift transport sediment up and down the beach?
.swash moves up the beach in the same direction as the wind so carries material up the beach at an angle
.the backwash then pulls material down the beach at right angles to the shore (due to the force of
gravity)
how does Longshore drift transport sediment at the coast?
.traction
.saltation
.suspension
.solution
what is traction?
.the rolling of sediment along the sea bed that is too heavy to be picked up and carried by the sea
what is saltation?
.sediment bounced along the sea bed, light enough to be picked up but too heavy to remain within the flow of water
what is suspension?
.smaller sediment that is picked up and carried within the flow of the water
what is solution?
.chemicals dissolved in the water, transported and precipitated elsewhere
what are the key factors affecting rates or transportation?
.energy and particle size
.in high energy environments, larger particles will be transported whereas in low energy environments, smaller particles will be transported
when does costal deposition take place?
.when the velocity of water or wind falls below a critical value for a paticular size of particle and can no longer be transported
