.country lies on the western rim of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, so it’s vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic hazards
.also lies in the path of regular tropical storms that track westward across the Pacific -1/3 of all storms occur in this region, making it the most exposed country in the world
what are the human causes as to why the Philippines is so vulnerable?
.widespread poverty reduces the capacity of the Philippines to cope with the challenge of natural hazards -the country struggles to afford to build stable hazard-proof infrastructure, provide educational programmes to citizens, provide mitigation disaster kits or to respond quickly to disasters when needed
why has widespread poverty occurred in the Philippines?

.rapid growth has led to greater inequality, with wealth concentrated in the hands of the rich -40% of the population work in the informal sector and in the Southern Philippines 75% of the population live in poverty
