Cognitive Approach Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is as Schema?
A mental framework of beliefs and expectations that affect cog processing. Developed from experience. Used from John Piaget, he said that children use assimilation and accommodation (quick radical change).
What are Internal Mental Processes?
‘Private’ operations of the mind such as perception and attention that mediate between stimulus and response. Can be compared to that of a computer.
What is a Theoretical Model?
Pictorial representations of a particular mental process based on current research evidence.
Wha is a Computer Model?
The mind is compared to a computer by suggesting there are similarities in the way the information is processed.
What is Cognitive Neuroscience?
The scientific study of biological structures that underpin cognitive processes.
Benefits of Schemas?
- Enables us to process vast amounts of information rapidly
- Can help us predict what will happen in our world based o our experiences, therefore, process lots of info quickly.
- Prevents us from becoming overwhelmed by environment stimuli.
Cons of Schema?
- Distort our interpretation of sensory information, leading to perceptual errors
- Can cause bias recall / see what we expect which has implications for memory and EWT.
- Faulty schema may have negative impact on mental health, e.g. depression.
