Self-Report Methods Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is a Questionnaire?
Participants give information to response to a set of questions that are sent to them. This can be in the post or sent to them online.
Pros + Cons of Questionnaires?
These don’t need a trained interviewer, and can be distributed easily. However, it can sometimes not be taken seriously which leads to acquiesce bias, the participants responding ‘‘yes’’ every time.
What is an Interview?
Participants give information in response to direct questioning from the researcher.
Pros + Cons of Interviews?
Can be conducted in person or over a phone call. This type of self-report can lead to rapport (relationship), making participants take the interview more seriously. However, interviews can lead to interview effects, which is when the characteristics of the interviewer can alter the behaviour of the participant.
What are Open Questions?
Participants can answer however they want. Gives qualitative data. Leads to more valid responses.
What are closed questions?
Participants have limited number of responses, e.g. do you like X, yes or no?
What is a Structured Interview?
The interviewer reads out a list of prepared questions as they are written. This means you don’t have to have a highly trained interviewer.
What is an Unstructured Interview?
No setlist of questions, an open conversation about a topic, rapport is more likely as participants are more comfortable, but you’d need a higher trained interviewer.
