What is the Ego?
Acts rationally, balancing the id and the superego according to the ‘reality principle’ and develops around 2-4 years old.
What is Superego?
Acts according to the ‘morality principle’ and attempts to control a powerful id with feelings of guilt. Develops 4-5 years old.
What is ID?
Drives us to satisfy selfish urges, acts according to the ‘pleasure principle’ and exists from birth.
What is the Oral Stage?
0-2
Physical focus is the mouth lips and tongue (sucking), which is a primary source of pleasure for the newborn. The psychological theme is dependancy, if the baby needs are fulfilled, they can move to the next stage, if not the baby will be mistrustful or over-fulfilled. Fixation will be highly dependant and passive/ Highly independent when under stress. The orally fixated person may flip from one type to the other.
Phallic Stage?
3-6
The libido is focused on the genitals in a curious way (freud specified the ‘penis’ for boys and girls. Psychological theme is morality and gender, and children have sexual feelings towards opposite sex parent & emotional conflict towards same sex parent. Fixation is promiscuous and amoral/asexual and puritanical (Doctrine of opposites again).
Latency Stage?
A per dof relative calm. The sexual and aggressive drives are less active and there is little in the way of psychosexual conflict.
Genital Stage?
12+
The libido is focused on the genitals. Psychological theme is maturity and creation and enhancement of life. Fixation is The genital character is not fixed at an early stage. This is the person who has worked it all out, well adjusted and balanced.
What is Libido
Sex drive.
What is the Denial Defence Mechanism?
Refusal to accept the reality of a situation.
What is the Displacement Defence Mechanism?
When a strong emotion is moved from the source of that emotion and placed onto a substitute target, generally a weaker target.
What is the Repression Defence Mechanism?
An unpleasant memory or painful emption is placed into the unconscious mind and is no longer accessible to the conscious mind.
Hysteria
Physical symptoms such as blindness or paralysis that have no physical cause.
Neuroses
Mental health problems where the individuals can have an insight into their problems.
What is Fixation?
An unresolved psychosexual conflict where part of the libido remains trapped and influences behaviour.
What is psychoanalysis?
Therapy used in the psychodynamic approach.
What is Oedipus Conflict?
Occurs during the phallic stage where a boy has unconscious sexual feelings towards his mother and fear towards his father
What is Electra Conflict?
Occurs during the phallic stage where a girl experiences unconscious sexual feelings towards her father and anger towards her mother
