Complications Of Skeleton Flashcards

1
Q

Concussion

A

injury to the brain that usually develops from a violent/jarring action of the head. force of impact causes the brain to bounce against the inside of the skull which causes confusion and temporary loss of normal brain function (memory, judgement, reflexes, and speech)

Q

Herniated disk

A

results from a disruption of an intervertebral disc, allowing the jelly like central portion (nucleus pulposus) to bulge out
complications include nerve irritation causing reflex sensory and motor dysfunctions. people sometime so get weakness of leg and shooting pain depending on where in the spine it occurs.

Q

Rotator cuff tear

A

injury occurs when one of the humerus (ball) moves outside of the centre of the socket (glenoid fossa) pain and weakness are common symptoms

Q

Tennis elbow

A

two main types are lateral epicondylitis which is simple and self-limiting and represents an acute inflammatory reaction to mechanical trauma. And lateral epicondylalgia represents chronic lateral epicondyle pain that can be debilitating . hard to hold a cup without dropping it, also lots of pain when twisting door knobs.

Q

Jammed finger

A

sprained ligament. very painful and needs ice, compression, and elevation to reduce swelling so there is no permanent disfiguration.

Q

Stress fracture

A

type of fracture that results from repeated low-magnitude forces. start as a small disruption in the continuity of the outer layers of cortical bone. with continued stress to the bone, cortical bone fracture can occur from weakness. symptoms include pain in toes and shins and weakness

Q

Shin splints

A

pain that occurs along the medial surface of the tibia. involve pain and inflammation without disruption of the cortical bone. from having flat feet or improper grounds.

Q

Jumpers knee

A

pain affecting the patellar tendon
tendonitis refers to a chronic repetitive strain injury to the infrapatellar ligament . caused by continually landing on knees in jumps and create a lot of pain when landing and jumping after landing.

Q

ACL tear

A

example of a sprain affecting the knee is an anterior cruciate ligament (acl) tear. the acl and posterior cruciate ligament (pcl) criss cross the knee joint and give the knee stability. of the two the acl is weaker and more likely to tear. can occur after turning too quickly. lots of pain and swelling.

Q

Ankle sprains

A

lateral ankle sprains, or inversion sprains occur when stress is applied. most common is lateral. joint swells rapidly making it hard to walk. sprains easily from walking and running.
