Convection Currents Flashcards

Q

Convection Currents

A

Magma near the outer core is heated. This causes it to expand, become less dense and rise towards the crust. As it rises, it slowly begins to cool. Once the magma reaches the crust, it spreads out and moves ten tectonic plates with it. The cooling magma becomes less dense and begins to sink towards the outer core where it is reheated again, triggering the same cycle. The rising and falling motion of the magma creates circular currents also known as convection currents
