Kerala Monsoon Flashcards
(4 cards)
Social Impact
Thousands of homes were destroyed.
This meant that over 1 million people were displaced and left homeless.
Therefore, many were forced to live in overcrowded temporary shelters with poor sanitation, increasing health risks.
Environmental Impact
Floodwaters created breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
This meant that waterborne and mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever, spread rapidly.
Therefore, a surge in illnesses placed huge pressure on local healthcare services.
Monsoon
A seasonal change in the direction of the winds of a region
Explain how the change in wind direction between summer and winter changes the weather in India
In summer, the land heats up and warm air rises. Moist winds from the Indian Ocean blow towards the land, bringing heavy rain. This is called the summer monsoon.
In winter, the land cools down and dry winds blow from the land to the sea. This brings dry weather, known as the winter monsoon.
Because of this, India has a wet season in summer and a dry season in winter.
