Earthquakes Flashcards

Define Earthquake
An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground. It can be the result of movements within the Earth’s crust or volcanic action
Earthquakes at Different Boundaries
Destructive : Occurs when a continental and an oceanic plate moves towards each other, and the oceanic plate subducts because it is more dense. Friction causes them to stick together. Once pressure builds up they snap apart. This releases seismic waves outwards causing an earthquake
Collision: Occurs when 2 continental plates move towards each other. Friction causes them to stick together. Once pressure builds up they snap apart. This releases seismic waves outwards causing an earthquake
Conservative : Occurs when 2 plates slide past each other in the same direction at different speeds, or when 2 plates move past each other at different speeds. Friction causes them to stick together. Once pressure builds up, they snap apart. This releases seismic waves outwards causing an earthquake
Constructive : Occurs when 2 plates move away from each other in opposite directions. Earthquakes are weaker in constructive plate boundaries because the plates are moving away from eachother
