Why is development uneven? Flashcards
Development
Development is the improvement of people’s standard of living and quality of life within a place
Standard of Living
How much money and material goods someone has access to
Quality of Life
How satisfied people are with their lives. It measures factors such as health, education and employment
Uneven Developement
Unequal distribution of people, resources and wealth
Steep Terrain (Physical)
Steep terrain can limit development by making it harder to build infrastructure and plant crops.
So this means that
In countries like Nepal, it’s hard to build roads and transport goods.
Therefore
Trade is slow and expensive.
This slows development as it’s harder to access jobs, healthcare, and education (QoL).
War (Human)
War can destroy infrastructure, create unsafe living conditions, and reduce investment.
So this means that
In Syria, homes, schools, and hospitals were badly damaged.
Therefore
People lose access to basic services and businesses shut down because they are to dangerous to operate. This reduces SoL and QoL because people can’t work, learn, or get healthcare.
Natural Disasters
Natural disasters cause major damage and deaths.
So this means that
In Haiti, earthquakes destroyed homes and hospitals.
Therefore
Money is spent on repairs instead of development.
This delays improvements to healthcare, education, and economy (SoL/QoL).
Poverty (Human)
Poverty means less access to schools and healthcare.
So this means that
In Chad, many children can’t afford school.
Therefore
There are fewer skilled workers.
This slows economic growth and lowers SoL and QoL.
Colonisation
If a country was colonised, such as Nigeria by the British, it had its natural resources exploited by the colonisers
Nigeria could not make a profit from selling their gold, because the British controlled its sales
This hinders development because Nigeria didn’t earn the profit from the gold, so had no income to us to development services such as healthcare or education. (QoL)
Climate
in very dry parts of the world, such as Mali, it makes it more difficult to grow crops
They will have less food available making it difficult to feed a growing population
This hinders development because starvation may occur and people’s quality of life will be low.
