What is cradle cap?
Seborrhoeic dermatitis on the scalp
Cradle cap typically appears in infants, characterized by greasy, scaly patches.
At what age is cradle cap most commonly observed?
First six months of age
What is the suggested cause of cradle cap?
Overactive sebaceous glands which secrete excess amounts of sebum
What are the symptoms of cradle cap?
Yellow/brown, greasy, scaly lesions found on the scalp
* Scales may become flaky and red
* Associated rash on eyebrows, nose, or nappy area
What is a recommended method to treat cradle cap?
Lightly massage an emollient on to your baby’s scalp to loosen the scales
* Gently brush your baby’s scalp with a soft brush
* Wash it with baby shampoo
What is a red flag that may indicate a need for referral in cases of cradle cap?
Secondary bacterial infection
What should be done if the condition of cradle cap is severe?
Referral for treatment may be necessary
