1 and 2 originate from cerebrum
3- midbrain pons junction
4- midbrain - longest intracranial length
5- pons
6-8 - pontine medulla junction
9-12- medulla oblangata- posterior to olive 9-11, anterior to olive-12

cn 1- olfactory- sensory
cn2 optic- sensory
cn3- oculomotor motor 4 eye muscles and levator palpebrae superioris and pupillary sphincter
CN IV
trochlear- motor superior oblique eye muscle
CN V
trigeminal- parts opthalmic- sensory to scalp, forehead, nose-
maxillary-sensory to cheeks, lower eye lid, nasal mucosa, upper lip, upper teeth and palate
mandibular- anterior 2/3 of tongue taste, skin over mandible/lower teethvesastication muscles
CN VI
adducens- motor lateral rectus
CN VII
facial mixed sensation to exterior ea, taste from ant 2/3 tongue, hard and soft palata sensory
muscles of facial expression
lacrimal, submandibular, sublingual glands and mucous glands of mouth and nose
CN VIII
vestibulocochlear sensory hearing and balance
CN IX
glossopharyngeal- mixed post 1/3 portion of tongue taste, exterior ear and middle ear caity
carotid body and sinus
parotid gland
stylopharyngeus
CN X
vagus mixed exterior ear, larynx and pharynx thoracic and abdominal viscera
taste from epiglottis region of tongue
smooth muscles of pharynx/larynx
CN XI
spinal accessory trapezius sternocleidomastoid, few fibers to viscera
CN XII
hypoglossal tongue muscles
