Psychological barriers of change (Sparkman&Walton,2017,2019)

Stereotype Content Model
Fiske, Cuddy, and others since early 2000’s
–> posits that interpersonal perceptions are based on two dimensions:
1. Warmth: trustworthiness, sociability, friendliness, kindness
- Competence: capability, assertiveness, agency, skill, effectiveness
Minority Stress vs General Stress
― General Stress: stress that all people may experience
▪ e.g., losing your job due to economic downturn ― Minority Stress: originates in prejudice & stigma
▪ e.g., losing your job because of who you are
Distal vs. Proximal Minority Stressors
Distal:
external stressors; originate from people or institutions and which impact the person
Proximal:
internal stressors; thoughts & feelings that arise as a result of distal stress
Social Justice
The fair treatment & equitable status of all individuals and social groups within a society
Equity vs Equality
― Equality: Gives everyone the same resources or opportunities; Assumes that everyone has the same needs
― Equity: Recognizes that everyone starts from a different place; Allocates resources and opportunities based on individual needs
Race vs. Ethnicity vs. Nationality
Ethnicity
–> broader than race
▪ Used to refer to long-shared cultural experiences, religious practices, traditions, ancestry, language, dialect, or origins
Nationality
▪ Legal & national membership in a specific nation-state
▪ Defined by borders with a particular government that provides protection to its citizens and
enforces law within its jurisdiction
Race
▪ The social construction and categorization of people based on perceived shared physical traits…
