Intersectionality
Social identities (like race, gender, economic class, etc) intersect to create complex and overlapping experiences within majority and minority groups
Identity Conflict
The internal struggle an individual experiences when their unique personal values, beliefs, and characteristics (personal identity) clash with the expectations or norms of the social groups they belong to (social identity)
Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979)
–> People derive part of their self-concept from membership in groups
* Each of us strives to enhance our self esteem, which has two components ― (personal & social identity)
- ‘in-group’ = the group someone identifies with most strongly
- ‘out-group’ = the group they do not belong to
Stigma
A mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person.
An attribute or characteristic that is devalued in a particular social context
▪ Virtual = the expectations we place on others
▪ Actual = the attributes someone actually possesses
3 types of Stigma (Goffman)
- stigma of the body
- stigma of the mind
- stigma of group identities

- Own
- Wise
- Normails
Stigma levels of analysis
