–> People derive part of their self-concept from membership in groups
* Each of us strives to enhance our self esteem, which has two components ― (personal & social identity)

  • ‘in-group’ = the group someone identifies with most strongly
  • ‘out-group’ = the group they do not belong to

An attribute or characteristic that is devalued in a particular social context
