Day 2 Flashcards

Q

TPP and TLA (approach plates)

A

DOD FLIP TLA (approach plates) tells you on the cover what is in it

Approach minimums change between radar and other types of approaches

(Check TCNs [from the hanger] for write-in changes to the TLA)

Both have a table of content and abbreviations page

  • General information has info for pilot controlled lighting, and units of measurement
  • Table of contents tells you what is contained in each volume
  • Index of instruments procedures shows lists of available procedures at each included airport facility.
  • Inoperative components - the only one that affects us is approach lighting system (ALS) - has a section for inop
  • Takeoff minimums - show what is needed to take off per airport listed
  • Alternate minimums - do not apply to military a/c
  • Radar minimums - same area as airport listed info
  • Land and Hold Short OPERATIONS - not authorized for Army Aviators
  • Hot Spots - (HS1,HS2, etc.)
  • Climb and descent tables - chart for climb/descent rates in terms of NM distance (also gives angles)
  • METAR conversion chart - TPP does not have it but TLA does
  • Approach lighting - TLA does not contain it, but TPP does
  • Frequency pairing section - TLA does not have, TPP does
  • Plan view - minimum safe altitudes for emergencies/not sure where you’re at
  • Landing minimums - bottom left corner of approach plate… we can reduce minimums by 50ft and not go below 1/4 SM VIS (can as Army Aviators initiate an approach with 0-0 conditions)

Back cover of TLA shows the volumes and which states they cover

STD = standard (100-1/4)

Sections of an IAP (instrument approach plate) - see slide [top right corner, if it says the airport - straight in approach… if it says a number, the runway is not in-line, if there is a letter, the runway is close to 30* off of the approach] final approach course top left. Solid black track on runway is means no approach lighting. Holding fix is the fix on the top right of the approach box.

main sections of approach plate

  • top margin ID
  • approach lighting and missed approach verbiage
  • pilot briefing info
  • plan view
  • profile view
  • airport diagram
  • landing minimums
  • time and speed table
  • bottom margin ID

Every approach plate has an airport sketch, but not every approach plate has an airport diagram
