What does ‘get the upper hand’ mean?
To get into a stronger position than someone else; to gain control or advantage over someone or something.
Examples: 1. Government troops are gradually gaining the upper hand over the rebels. 2. After months of negotiations, our company finally got the upper hand in the deal. 3. The team got the upper hand when their opponents’ star quarterback went out with an injury. 4. She got the upper hand in the debate by presenting solid evidence. 5. The home team got the upper hand early in the game with a 3-0 lead.
What does ‘give him a hand’ mean?
To help, aid, or assist; to applaud or clap.
Examples: 1. Could you please give me a hand carrying this mattress? 2. Would you give me a hand moving this furniture? 3. Everyone gave the performer a hand after the amazing show. 4. The little boy gave the old woman a hand with her groceries. 5. I’ll give you a hand with your homework if you need it.
What does ‘give the cold shoulder’ mean?
To deliberately ignore someone or treat them with indifference.
Examples: 1. At the party, Carl tried to talk to Suzanne, but she gave him the cold shoulder. 2. Ever since their argument, she’s been giving him the cold shoulder. 3. The new employee felt hurt when his colleagues gave him the cold shoulder. 4. The kids all gave her the cold shoulder. 5. Instead of giving her the cold shoulder, you should talk about what’s bothering you.
