What are the two parts of the digestive system?
Consists of two parts: accessory glands and alimentary canal
What are the accessory glands?
Salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas which secrete digestive enzymes
What is the alimentary canal?
A musculomembranous tube that extends from the mouth to the anus
What are the parts of the alimentary canal?
Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus
What happens in the mouth?
Food is masticated and converted into a bolus by insalivation
What are the organs of swallowing?
Phaynx and esophagus
Where does the digestive process begin?
Stomach
Where is the digestive process completed?
Small intestine
What is the first division of the digestive system?
Mouth
What is the esophagus?
A long, muscular tube that carries food and saliva from the layrgopharynx to the stomac
How long is the adult esophagus?
10 inches long and 3/4 inches in diameter
Where does the esophagus begin?

At the esophageal hiatus at the level of T10
Where does the esophagus join the stomach?
Esophogastric junction at the level of T11
What is the expanded portion of the terminal esophagus?
Cardiac antrum
What are the proximal and distal ends of the esophagus bordered by?
Sphincters
What is the upper esophageal sphincter?
Junction between the pharynx and esophagus and prevents air from getting into the esophagus
What happens when the UES is relaxed?

Where does the stomach lie?
Between the esophagus and small intesting
What are the four parts of the stomach?
- Cardia
- Fundus
- Body
- Pyloric portion
What is the cardia?
Section immediately surrounding the esophageal opening
What is the fundus?
Superior portion of the stomach that expands superiorly and fills the dome of the left hemidiaphragm
When the patient is upright, what is the fundus usually filled with?
Air, known as the gas bubble
