Diseases of the lymph nodes and lymph vessels in MFA. Topographic anatomy of the lymphatic system, classification, etiology, clinical examination. Basic principles of treatment Flashcards
(14 cards)
Classifications of Lymph node diseases
- Inflammatory→ non specific(acute/chronic)/specific
- Other forms of lymphadenitis→ infectious diseases
- *-Tumour diseases**
Lymph nodes in the maxillofacial and cervical region
- Submandibular
- Submental
- Facial
- Preauricular and parotid
- Retroauricular
- Occipital
- Cervical
- Subclavicular
- Subclavian
Main collector of lymph from maxillofacial region
-Submandibular Lymph nodes
Lymphadenitis
Secondary inflammatory infection of lymph nodes← Periostitis, osteomyelitis
Lymphangitis
- Secondary inflammatory condition of lymph vessels
- Primary form in case of trauma
Types of lymphadenitis and lymphangitis
-Serous/purulent
Acute/chronic
Vessels affected→ Capillary/reticular/trunk
Bacterial flora that cause lymphadenitis and lymphangitis
- Staphylococci
- Streptococci
- E.coli
- Fusiform bacteria
Infections that may cause lymphadenitis and lymphangitis
- Acute or exacerbated periodontitis
- Radicular cyst
- Alveolitis
- Maxillary abscesses and phlegmons
- Acute periostitis
- Osteomyelitis of the jaw
Local Symptoms of Lymphangitis
- Pain
- Local fever
- Swelling
- Redness of skin or mucous membranes
Clinical presentation of acute lymphangitis
- Hyperaemia of skin
- Pain
- Wounds, boils and carbuncles
- Fever, malaise, chills, headache
Clinical presentation of Chronic lymphangitis
- Painless infiltrate
- Normal or blue-violet skin
Lymph node examination methods
- Palpation
- Biopsy
- Scintigraphy examination
- Conventional x-ray
Treatment of lymphadenitis
- Removal or primary cause
- Incision in purulent forms→ Drainage
- Removing destroyed/damaging nodes
- Medication→ Antibiotics/anti-inflammatory
Specific Lymphadenitis
- Tuberculous Lymphadenitis of cervical node most common
- Fever
- Sweating and fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Enlarged lymph nodes
