How do you treat ectoparasites?
Removal of parasites from patient
Anti parasitic drugs, sprays, powders, shampoos, dips
What are superficial dermatomycoses( fungal infections)?
3 most common fungal species to infect dogs and cats

What is the clinical signs of fungal infections?
Rapidly growing circular patches of alopecia w/ peripheral erythema and or crustiness
Lesions most frequently on face and head
Pet owners may describe similar lesions on themselves
Immune system component
Some cats remain carriers after clinical signs clear
How do you diagnose fungal infections?
Woods lamp
Fugal culture
DTM: color change and growth
How do you treat fungal infections?
Topical antifungal medication-treat for 2 weeks after lesion clears
Bathe animal w/ antifungal shampoo 1-2 times weekly until cultures are negative
Oral antifungal medication- 4-6 weeks
Thorough environmental cleaning, fungus on hair viable for up to 18 months
What is acute moist dermatitis (“ Hot spots”)?
Skin lesions that appear as well- demarcated, red, moist, hot, and painful areas
Usually secondary to self trauma
Common in heavy-coated, water- loving breeds
Usually appears seasonally
What are the clinical signs of hot spots?
Rapid appearance of red, painful patches, hot and moist as well as
Hair loss over the area
Pruritis
How do you diagnose hot spots?
Clinical signs, typical lesions
How do you treat hot spots?
+/- pain control/ lesions
Clip hair from and beyond lesions, gently cleanse w/ medicated shampoo/ chlorhex
Topical antibiotics ointment/ spray
Steroids and systemic antibiotics may speed healing
E- collar to keep from further self- trauma
What are the types of tumors of the skin?
Benign skin tumors- histiocytomas, lipoma, papillomaas( wart), sebaceous cysts
Malignant skin tumors- basal cell carcinomas, fibrosarcomas ( not vaccine- induced)
Vaccine-induced fibrosarcoma( feline)
Mast cell tumors
Melanoma( benign or malignant)
Perinatal adenoma or adenocarcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma

Biopsy- pathologist
FNA
Incisional
