DNA replication Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the structure of DNA?
DNA is a double helix.
What are the repeating units of DNA called?
Nucleotides.
What are the components of each nucleotide?
Sugar (deoxyribose), phosphate, and nitrogenous base (A, T, C, G).
What does it mean that DNA strands are antiparallel?
One strand runs 3’ → 5’ and the other runs 5’ → 3’.
What is the function of DNA Helicase?
Unzips the DNA strand.
What is the function of Primase?
Adds short RNA primers.
What is the function of DNA Polymerase?
Adds new bases to build new DNA strands.
What is the function of DNA Ligase?
Seals gaps (joins Okazaki fragments).
What is the leading strand in DNA replication?
Copied continuously.
What is the lagging strand in DNA replication?
Copied in pieces (Okazaki Fragments).
