Human Homeostasis Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is homeostasis?
Maintains stable internal conditions.
What are some examples of conditions maintained by homeostasis?
Temperature, heart rate, breathing, ionic concentrations, blood sugar levels, etc.
What mechanisms does homeostasis use?
Uses feedback mechanisms.
What are the components of the regulation process in homeostasis?
Receptor, Control Center, Effector.
What is the role of the receptor in homeostasis?
Sensitive to a particular stimulus.
What is the role of the Control Center in homeostasis?
Processes information.
What is the role of the Effector in homeostasis?
Affects (responds to) the same stimulus.
What is negative feedback?
Variation outside normal limits triggers automatic corrective response. Response stops/opposes disturbance.
What is positive feedback?
a process where the product of a reaction causes an increase in that reaction,
