Domain A Flashcards
(18 cards)
Goals of behavior analysis as a science
Description- quantify and classify observed events to test for possible relationships
Prediction- look at descriptions of events and identify the probability of one event occurring when another event occurs
Control- experimental test of the prediction
5 Philosophical Assumptions
DEPPS
__________
Determinism- the world is an orderly, predictable, lawful place where all events occur as a result of cause and effect
Empiricism-knowledge is built on objective observation
Parsimony- simplest and already established theory must be ruled out before considering more complex ones; ** SIMPLE **
Pragmatism- what is discovered in research is only useful when there are practical positive outcomes (e.g. effective for a client); use what’s best for client/ what makes sense for them
Selectionism- behavior evolves and is maintained by consequences (function)
B.F. Skinner; seeks to understand all human behavior, private (covert behavior) and public (overt behavior). radical= “far reaching/thoroughgoing”
radical behaviorism
4 Branches of Behavior Analysis
BEAP
__________
Behaviorism- environmental (not mentalistic) explanation of behavior
Experimental Analysis of Behavior- research done in controlled settings
ABA- applied research using principles from EAB to improve socially significant behavior
Professional Practice- individuals implementing ABA procedures within their professions
examines philosophical, theoretical, historical, methodological issues; contrasts mentalism; environmental explanation of behavior; today’s behaviorism= skinner’s radical behaviorism
behaviorism (1 of 4 branches of ABA)
research on basic processes and principles; conducted mainly in labs with human and non-human subjects; controlled settings
EAB (1 of 4 branches of ABA)
uses behavior principles derived from EAB to improve socially important behavior; involves assessing environmental influences on behavior, assessment-based intervention, & data-based decisions; technology for improving bx
ABA (1 of 4 branches of ABA)
individuals in various fields of work implementing ABA procedures within their professions
professional practice guided by the science of behavior anaylsis (1 of 4 branches of ABA)
7 Dimensions of ABA
BATCAGE
Behavioral- focus on observable/measurable behavior
Applied- teach socially significant behaviors in real-world settings
Technological- described clearly and detailed so they are replicable
Conceptually Systematic- procedures should come from basic principles of behavior analysis (punishment, extinction, reinforcement)
Analytic- when a functional relationship is shown (between behavior and environment)
Generality- skills that persist across time and environments
Effective- interventions must produce practical/significant/meaningful change/improvement in an individual’s life
focus on observable and measurable behavior
Behavioral
make a difference of social importance; choose meaningful behaviors to target
Applied
procedures are clear and replicable
Technological
relate procedures to behavior principles; procedures should be derived from basic principles of behavior (punishment, extinction, reinforcement)
Conceptually Systematic
prove relationships between behavior and environment; when a functional relationship is shown
Analytic
results that persist across time in conditions that differ from original intervention (people, settings, bxs)
Generality
behavioral techniques result in socially significant change (how much change happens)
Effective
demonstrated when the manipulated events (IV) produce a reliable change in any measurable dimension of the targeted bx (DV)
functional relation
3 Principles of Behavior
Punishment
Extinction
Reinforcement
hint: they are all based on consequences
