Dui Yao and Dui Xue pairs can be described as:
1 - In the music world, single herbs/points are solos, formulas/point Rx are orchestras, and dui yao/xue pairs are duets
2 - The fxn of each herb (dui yao) or point (dui xue) changes depending on which herb or point it is paired with
Ma Huang + Gui Zhi

RELEASE EXTERIOR WIND COLD
* Ma Huang is a strong herb that works on the superficial/epidermis level
* Gui Zhi is a sl. less strong herb, but goes sl. deeper than MH (dermis level)
* Indications: Severe chills and fever, aversion to cold, lack of sweats h/a, b/a d/t W-C excess (Shi) type, Bi syndrome d/t WCD, cough/ asthma d/t W-C obstructing LU Qi

* D&D Combo - Disperse + Descend - MH opens the pores/disperses; XR descends
* Indications: Cough and Asthma d/t WC or LU Heat

Jing Jie + Fang Feng
RELEASE EXTERIOR
* Even though these herbs are sl. warm, they are not dry and therefore can be used for both Wind Cold AND Wind Heat
* Indications: early stage of measles and skin eruption with itching, early stage of carbuncle or boils, accompanied by chills & fever

Xin Yi Hua + Cang Er Zi

* Open the nasal orifice
* Indications: CC w/ H/A, nasal congestion, and runny nose d/t W-C; Deep source nasal congestion, loss of smell, turbid nasal phlegm, chronic, acute rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, hypertrophic rhinitis, sinusitis, parasinusitis, frontal sinusitis
Found in Cang Er Zi San
Associated points: LI4, LU7, LI20, Bitong, Du23 (upward for runny nose; downward for nasal congestion), BL7
Sang Ye + Ju Hua
RELEASE EXTERIOR WIND HEAT
* W-H COUGH - Sang Ye = chief
* W-H EYE INFECTION - Ju Hua = chief
* Indications: Fever, aversion to wind, light sweating, cough, h/a, sl. thirst d/t W-H; H/A, vertigo, photophobia, red, swollen, painful eyes d/t LYR
Found in Sang Ju Yin
Ju Hua is a lot like GB20; there are also different kinds of Ju Hua for different fxns
Sang Ye is one portion of the mulberry that is medicinal
Sheng Ma + Ge Gen
RELEASE EXTERIOR WIND HEAT
* Vent rashes
* Indications: Early stage of measles, H/A, fever; Incomplete eruption of measles, fever
Found in Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang
Ge Gen = Kudzu Root –> along with Shan Zha + Jue Ming Zi = good for Hyperlipidemia; Ge Hua = Kudzu Flower –> good for hangover along with Juniper + Rosemary EO
Shi Gao + Zhi Mu
CLEAR HEAT - QI LEVEL
* In Shang Han Lun - this is for Yang Ming Heat (Not to be confused
* In Wen Bing - this is for Qi Level Heat
* Excess (Shi) Heat + Damaged Fluids
* Indications: 4 Bigs - high fever, profuse sweating, big thirst, big pulse - SURGING PULSE (big wave, fades away) (d/t heat in Qi Level); Xiao Ke - Upper burner - polydipsia, dry mouth and tongue, great thirst d/t excess (Shi) LU Heat
Found in Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction)
Shi Gao is strictly Excess Heat whereas Zhi Mu, if paired with Huang Bai, is for KD Def Heat or if paired with Chuan Bei Mu is for LU Def Heat
Xi Xin + Shi Gao
CLEAR HEAT - QI LEVEL
* Good for Shao Yin H/A - KD - so that’s why toothache
* Indications: ST Heat, toothache, bleeding/swollen/ painful gums, oral ulcers, glossitis; H/A d/t WH entering clear orifices
Xi Xin is a warm herb, but it’s okay bc it’s used in combo with Shi Gao and in general, when there are warm and cold herbs together, cold herbs will generally win
Zhi Zi + Dan Dou Chi
CLEAR HEAT - QI LEVEL HEAT
* When a patient started with W-H, but the heat didn’t resolve fully and it is lingering in the Qi Level
* Indications: Irritability, agitation, insomnia, vexation during or after Warm-Febrile Disease; External contraction of W-H of febrile disease

Lu Gen + Bai Mao Gen
CLEAR HEAT - QI LEVEL HEAT
* Both of these herbs are “straw” or “tube” shaped - similar to Ma Huang and they have descending energy and promote urination they clear heat via urination
* Indications: Fever, thirst, irritability d/t warm-febrile disease or WH; cough/wheezing d/t LU Heat; Early stage of measles d/t toxic heat; acute nephritis, UTI accompanied by fever, dysuria, edema; N/V d/t ST Heat; Epidemic hemorrhagic fever
Lu Gen + Bai Mao Gen clear heat via URINE
Da Huang + Mang Xiao clear heat via STOOL
Mu Dan Pi + Dan Shen
CLEAR HEAT - BLOOD HEAT
* Blood Heat - Hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, purpura, rubella, pruritis
* Menstruation irregularities or postpartum abd. pn d/t blood heat causing blood stasis
* continuous low grade fever d/t Yin Xu
* Hot, red, swollen, painful joints d/t Heat Bi
Mu Dan Pi - cools blood; Dan Shen - moves blood –> similar to SP10 –> which cools and moves blood
Chi Shao + Bai Shao

* BOTH support LV
* Bai Shao - Tonify Blood; Calm LV
* Chi Shao - Moves/ Cools Blood; Clears LV
* Blood-Heat; chronic low-grade fever
* Yin and BF Def., dry mouth, red, and painful eyes
* chest and hypochondriac pn, abdominal pn
* irregular menstruation, amenorrhea d/t Blood xu and stasis w/ heat

Huang Bai + Cang Zhu
CLEAR HEAT - DAMP HEAT
* Wilting of the lower limbs w/ pn d/t D-H pouring downward to the lower part
* Cang Zhu is one of the most drying herbs of the pharmacopia
* D-H in the genital area - vaginal discharge; external vaginal itching; cloudy, scanty urination
Red, swollen, hot, painful joints d/t W-D-H Bi Syndrome
Found in Er Miao San and can be modified to become San Miao San & Si Miao San
Remember the 3 Huangs for clearing D-H
-Huang Qin - upper burner (can work in all three jiaos, but particularly upper)
-Huang Lian - middle burner (can work in all three jiaos, but particularly middle)
-Huang Bai - lower burner (works specifically for lower jiao)
Cang Zhu + Bai Zhu both tonify SP + Dry Damp
-Cang Zhu is better at drying damp
-Bai Zhu is better for tonifying SP

* Dysentery with abdominal pn and tenesmus d/t D-H and Qi Stag in the Lower Burner

Huang Lian Dui Yaos
Huang Lian + Mu Xiang = Dysentery w/ Tenesmus
Huang Lian + Wu Zhu Yu = Zuo Gui Wan; Acid Regurgitation
Huang Lian + E Jiao = Shao Yin - Heat Patterns
Mu Xiang = good for intestines; Mu Xiang + Bing Lang = equivalent to 4 Doors
Mu Xiang, Sha Ren, Chen Pi = Prevents Stagnation fr too much tonics
Jin Yin Hua + Lian Qiao
CLEAR HEAT - TOXIC HEAT
* Cold and influenza d/t W-H
* Warm-Febrile disease with internal heat
* H/A, eye pn, toothache, sinusitis, painful, swollen throat d/t W-H
* Skin eruption w/ pruritis d/t W-H (like boils, measles)
* Skin inflammation d/t toxic heat

Niu Bang Zi + Lian Qiao
CLEAR HEAT - TOXIC HEAT
* Mouth and tongue ulcer, swollen gum, sore throat d/t Heat
* Red swelling, carbuncle, erythemas, mumps, acute febrile maculopapular rash
Found in Yin Qiao San
ASIDE: When differentiating seeds “Ren” vs. “Zi” (both mean seed) “Rens” are bigger and have more oils so are good for constipation; Zi - benefits eyes, but can also moisten intestines
Ban Lan Gen + Xuan Shen
CLEAR HEAT - TOXIC HEAT
* Painful/red/swollen throat d/t Yin Xu Heat or Excess (Shi) Fire damaging Yin
* Good for a sore throat that has not yet been accompanied by a W-H febrile disease; so early stage W-H
Found in Ban Lan Da Qing Tang
Xuan Shen + Mu Li
CLEAR HEAT - TOXIC HEAT
* Neck lumps or nodules such as in scrofula, lipoma, swollen glands, goiter in patterns of Phlegm-Fire
* Used for similar nodules in** inguinal canal** and other parts of body
Found in Xiao Luo Wan
DY #43 - Zhe Bei Mu + Xia Ku Cao = dissipates nodules –> you can mix (XS + ML) + (ZBM + XKC) to strengthen the dissipate nodule action
Seems to be for toxic heat nodules found near lymphs?
Hua Shi + Gan Cao
CLEAR HEAT - SUMMER HEAT
* Summer-Heat + Damp: marked by fever, restlessness, thirst, diarrhea, difficulty in urine
* Damp-Heat or BL marked by dark urine, difficulty, painful urination or urinary stone
Found in Liu Yi San (6:1 ratio powder)
180g Hua Shi + 30g Gan Cao –> to clear SH
Knowing the numbers helps:
1 - Yi - Liu Yi San
2 - Er - Er Chen Tang; Er Miao San
3 - San - San Zi Yang Qin Tang
4 - Si - Si Jun Zi Tang, Si Wu Tang - But if you add Si + Si = 8 (Ba) –> So Ba Zhen Tang bc it’s SJZT + SWT together
5 - Wu - Wu Ling San
6 - Liu - LWDHW
7 - Qi - San Qi (San = 3; Qi = 7 –> harvest between 3-7 years)
8 - Ba - Ba Zhen Tang
9 - Jiu - Jiu Wei Qiang Huo Tang
10 - Shi - Shi Quan Da Bu Tang - Ba Zhen Tang + Huang Qi + Rou Gui
Qing Hao + Bie Jia
CLEAR HEAT - DEFICIENT HEAT
* Steaming bone fever, night sweats, cough d/t Yin Xu
* Malaria
* Later Stage of Warm-Febrile Disease
Found in Qing Hao Bie Jia Tang
“Bie Jia” the Turtle dives deeper and takes Qing Hao with them to attack the deficient heat
Gui Ban vs. Bie Jia
GB –> Ventral aspect, Yin, stops bleeding
BJ –> Dorsal aspect, Yang, Move blood
Zhi Mu + Huang Bai
CLEAR HEAT - DEFICIENT HEAT
* Yin Xu Heat: afternoon fever, steaming bones, night sweats, seminal emission
* Excessive sexual desire and easy erection d/t deficient-Fire and hyperactive Mingmen Fire
* Dysuria d/t Yin Xu and Yang losing its ability to transform
Found in Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan
Da Huang + Mang Xiao
PURGATIVE
* Constipation w/ hard, dry stools, abd. pn d/t Heat Accumulation
* Constipation w/ high fever, tidal fever, mental confusion d/t excess (Shi) heat in Yang Ming Organ
* Chronic or Severe constipation d/t Heat
Found in Da Cheng Qi Tang and Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang
Know four types of abdominal disharmony
1. Shi - Hardness - Da Huang
2. Zao - Dryness - Mang Xiao
3. Man - Fullness - objective - visible bloating - Hou Po
4. Pi - Distension - subjective - the sensation of obstruction, distention, heaviness - Zhi Shi
^^Da Cheng Qi Tang has all four of those herbs
