Ecology Flashcards
(22 cards)
Biotic
Living
Abiotic
Something that is not and never has been living
Biodiversity
The number of species found in an area
Ecosystem
a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their environment.
Biomes
a complex biotic community characterized by distinctive plant and animal species and maintained under the climatic conditions of the region, especially such a community that has developed to climax.
Evidence
that which tends to prove or disprove something; ground for belief; proof.
Organism
A living thing
Nonnative species
An organism that does not originate in that area
Consumer
An organism that feeds on plants or other animals
Ecology
the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms.
Invasive species
A species that moves into an area and causes havoc
Food web
a series of organisms related by predator-prey and consumer-resource interactions; the entirety of interrelated food chains in an ecological community.
Food chain
a series of organisms interrelated in their feeding habits, the smallest being fed upon by a larger one, which in turn feeds a still larger one, etc.
Producer
Ecology. an organism, as a plant, that is able to produce its own food from inorganic substances.
Native species
A species that originates in that area
Trade off
the exchange of one thing for another of more or less equal value, especially to effect a compromise.
Habitat
the natural environment of an organism; place that is natural for the life and growth of an organism
Energy pyramid
a depiction of the amount of energy in each trophic level of an ecosystem
Omnivore
An animal that eat both plants and other animals
Carnivore
A flesh eating organism
Herbivore
A plant eating organism
Decomposer
Ecology. an organism, usually a bacterium or fungus, that breaks down the cells of dead plants and animals into simpler substances.
