Ecosytems Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is a producer?
E.g grass uses sunlight energy to produce food
What is a consumer
Gets its energy by eating other organisms. They can eat producers or other consumers
What is a decomposer?
An organism that gets its energy by breaking down dead material, e.g. animal remains
Example of a small scale uk ecosystem?
Epping forest - trees shed leaves - decompose into soil - returns nutrients to the soil, if there’s a disease outbreak in trees, fewer acorns are available for deer and squirrels affecting there populations
What’s does a food chain show you?
What eats what
What is a food web?
Lots of food chains and how they overlap
Explain the nutrient cycle?
When dead material decomposes nutrients are released into the soil. This is then taken up by plants. The pants may be eaten by consumers. When the plants or consumers die nuitrents is brought back into the soil
What effect would removing predators from an ecosystem have?
Means there’s more prey which could lead to overgrazing
Distribution and characteristics tundra?
Found at high latitudes (above 60 degrees north) in northern Europe Canada ,Alaska. Winters cold, summers brief and there is little rainfall , hardly any trees - vegetation includes mosses, grasses , layer of permanently frozen ground called permafrost
Distribution and characteristics grassland
Savannah found between tropics there is distinct dry and wet seasons , most vegetation is grasses , found in higher latitudes where there is more variation in temperature
Distribution and characteristics temperate deciduous forest
Mainly in mid latitudes where there are four distinct seasons. Summers are warm, winters are relatively mild and there’s rainfall all year round. Trees loose leaves in winter to cope with cold
Distribution and characteristics polar?
Found around the north and south poles. They are not very cold , icy and dry . Not much grows at all, they remain dark for serval months each year so the growing season is very short - about 2 months
Distribution and characteristics hot desert?
Found between 15 and 35 north and south of the equator where there is little rainfall . It’s very hot during the day and very cold at night , shrubs and cacti are sparsely distributed in soil
Distribution, characteristics tropical rainforests?
Around the equator, between the topics. Where it’s hot and wet all year round. Lush forest, dense canopies
Distribution and characteristics boreal forest?
Also known as taiga found between 50 - 60 N. Winters are cold and dry and summers are mild and moist. Trees are coniferous - they are evergreen and have needles
