Q

Example of a small scale uk ecosystem?

A

Epping forest - trees shed leaves - decompose into soil - returns nutrients to the soil, if there’s a disease outbreak in trees, fewer acorns are available for deer and squirrels affecting there populations

Q

Explain the nutrient cycle?

A

When dead material decomposes nutrients are released into the soil. This is then taken up by plants. The pants may be eaten by consumers. When the plants or consumers die nuitrents is brought back into the soil

Q

Distribution and characteristics tundra?

A

Found at high latitudes (above 60 degrees north) in northern Europe Canada ,Alaska. Winters cold, summers brief and there is little rainfall , hardly any trees - vegetation includes mosses, grasses , layer of permanently frozen ground called permafrost

Q

Distribution and characteristics temperate deciduous forest

A

Mainly in mid latitudes where there are four distinct seasons. Summers are warm, winters are relatively mild and there’s rainfall all year round. Trees loose leaves in winter to cope with cold

Q

Distribution and characteristics polar?

A

Found around the north and south poles. They are not very cold , icy and dry . Not much grows at all, they remain dark for serval months each year so the growing season is very short - about 2 months
