Rainforest Sustainable Management Flashcards
(7 cards)
Manage rainforest sustainably - selective logging
Only some trees, less trees remain. This is less damaging to the forest than clearing a whole area. If only a few a trees are taken from an area the overall structure is kept. This allows the forest to regenerate.
Managing rainforest sustainably - ecotourism
Minimises damage to The environment and benefits local people
Only a small number of visitors are allowed into an area at a time and rules are imposed to minimise environmental impacts
Local people get income from being guides
Jobs involved in this means less jobs in logging
Managing rainforest sustainably
- replanting
This is when new trees are planted to replace the ones that are cut down
Managing rainforest sustainably- conservation
Many counties have set up national parks and nature preserves within rainforests in these areas damaging activities e.g. logging, are restricted however lack of funds can make it difficult to police restrictions
As a result, some counties have set up funds which overseas governments and businesses can invest in. The counties get money in exchange for rainforest conservation
Managing rainforest sustainably- hardwood agreements
Hardwood is a general term for wood like mahogany, it’s very dense so used for furniture, high demand from rich counties meaning hardwood trees are becoming rare. There are international agreements to prevent illegal logging, and to promote the use of hardwood from sustainable forests
Managing rainforest sustainably- reducing debt
Tropical rainforests are mainly found in LICs which borrow money from HICs this money must be paid back with interest so poorer counties log, farm and mine the rainforests me to pay back the debt.
Reducing debt means countries don’t have to do this and rainforests can be conserved
Managing rainforest sustainably education?
Educating international community about impacts of deforestation can encourage people to buy products form sustainable sources.
Educating local people about the impacts of deforestation can also help reduce.
