How did the religious changes affect society?
Ed

A

Loss of charitable functions of monasteries and chantries, including care for sick and elderly and provision of education
Services became plainer and trad relig practices declined
Ppl less likely to leave money to their parish churches… likely to be confiscated as the church was slowly losing wealth
1550 John Hopper admitted the pace of reform was slowed by an uncooperative public

Western rebellion causes + aims

A

1549 in dev and Cornwall… caused by relig grievances (new BCP) + sheep tax
Cornish wanted to destroy land or kill as many gentry as possible
16 demands made by the Rebs… many ab relig but econ + pol issues also raised
Only 3rd set of demands survived… priests had hijacked rebellion … sheep tax + rising food prices no longer incl

Western rebellion course + consequences

A

Over 6000-7000 rebels set siege to Exeter
Hellyons was killed for standing up to Rebs
Lacked organisation
Started in Sampford Courtenay after priest gave a service according to the new BCP
Orig pardons + negotiations arranged, Rebs refused this bc they thought they could achieve more. Food + water supplies cut to Exeter… to stop the poor handing the city to the rebels, gentry supplied them w/ food, water and firewood.
Army sent down, 4000 Rebs killed

Kett’s rebellion causes

A

16,000 rebels
Hatred of local officials (particularly Flowerdew)
Resentment of enclosure
Religion- wanted prot reforms
Social- breakdown of governing class and those below them, wanted their common rights and end to fold course system
Econ- raises in rents and harvests meaning poor wld be unable to survive

Kett’s rebellion course + consequences

A

Kett executed on accounts of treason
Took Norwich (2nd biggest city in eng)
Embarrassed (the old) Northumberland… had to remove troops from Scottish Garrisons and mercenaries hired
D of Warwick (N’land) brought down 12000 men
Rebs refused multiple pardons
Rebels called out god save the King, wasn’t against gov just policies
August Ket made fatal decision to abandon fortified pos on top of Mousehold Heath… N’land received another 1000 foreign mercaneries
3000 Rebs murdered
