MQS pop at Fr court
Married to Dauphin Francois…. Heir of fr throne… atp threat to eliz as was eliz’s rightful heir + constantly pushing claim to eng throne by wearing the royal coat of arms
Did not agree to T of Edinburgh… to stop pushing claim to throne… not allowed to pass through eng on her way back to Scot
Returned to Scot + ruled as cath queen during prot ref… pos = unstable
Bit of a threat but not massive- forced to abdicate after murder of Darnley

MQS in Eng- whilst Alva in N’lands fear he may come over
1569- N’ern earls- threat wanted cath + MQS
1570 papal bull… Eliz’s subjects don’t have to obey her
1571 Ridolfi plot- plot to replace Eliz with/ MQS
Parl put forward 2 bills
B of Exclusion- to exclude MQS from suc, avoid more plots
B of Attainder- if MQS found guilty of plot involvement then she could be attained for treason… not passed
Mid 1570s not a threat… housed, living peacefully
+ York conference 1570 = waste of time = inconclusive
Threat at start but not at end, one could q whether it is Mary who is the threat or if she is being used as a figure head.

1580 papal pronouncement- ok to assassinate eliz- puts her pos in jeopardy
1584 B of Assosciation (not legal) PC agree to assassinate MQS if nec
1583 Throckmorton plot… int cath conspiracy, backed by Sp + Papal money
1585 A of queen’s safety stated MQS could be removed from suc, tried + exec if involved in a plot
SIG THREAT
Babington plot 1586- consp to free Mary, sent each other code messages. Plan was to free Mary + rise in Reb + assassinate eliz
Plot was intercepted, plotters exec & Mary put on trial
MQS exec Feb 1587 sig threat

Sometimes fuelled by Eliz’s security (understandable due to plots + wider context)
