The Lovell Rebellion… course

A

1486
Led by Lovell + Stafford brothers
After h7 sanc at bosworth sought sanc… left sanc in Colchester pursued by H7 spies
Took place in Yorkshire + Worcestershire
Failed to attract support- entirely unsuccessful
22nd April 1486, Lovell fled to burg after losing faith in the plan

The Lovell Rebellion consequences

A

Humphrey Stafford was captured and executed (Thomas pardoned)
Arrest prompted protest towards Pope ab breaking sanc- papal bull in August limiting the rights of sanc- especially in cases of treason
Yorkist learned they needed a Yorkist prince to stand against H
Made clear how important it was to secure dynasty on multiple fronts… domestically sup king= reward
Foreign country could benefit from sup Yorkist claims

Lambert Simnel course

A

1487… May 1487 Marg of Burg mercenaries to Ireland where E of Kildare crowns Simnel
H offers Rebs a pardon- they refuse + H displays real E of Warwick… ignored
June 1487- B of Stoke, John de La Pole (e of Lincoln) captured + Simnel put to work in royal kitchens
28 other Rebs had land attained
Eliz pub crowned Q to unite ppl… 1488 T of friendship w/ Maximilian

Yorkist- tried to seize Brecon castle however Reb seized right from the beginning. Put down by Rhys Ap-Thomas
H v severe w/ leaders… imprisoned

Perkin Warbeck context/ aims

A

1492-97
Persuaded by Marg of Burg to imp Richard of York- E4 younger son
His supporters viewed him as a great way of overthrowing H
Discard Warbeck- make E of Warwick king
Much wider base of support than Simnel

A

1492- Warbeck rec as Rich 4 in Fr- H + C sign T of Etaples. PW- new refuge
1493- Warbeck rec in N’lands. H imposes trade sancs
1494- Warbeck rec by Emp Max
1495- W rec by James 4 of Scot. H’s spies rev Sir Will Stanley as traitor- executed
1496- Warbeck launches attack from Scot- fails when n’ern nobles and commons remained loyal to H
1497- J bought off by Truce of Ayton… Warbeck + followers turn up in Cornwall amidst tax Rebs, little sup surrenders to H’s men… forced to pub admit deception

PW consequences

A

1497 put in stocks + imprisoned… after admitting deception
1498- escapes prison + recaptured. H plants a spy in the tower who persuades warb + war to escape
1499 both arrested + executed

Yorkshire rebellion 1489

A

Parl votes for subsidy for war to def Brittany
April 1489- many felt they had paid enough, Reb broke out. Rebs murdered, E of Northumberland- victim of resentment against tax
Easily suppressed by H’s men
No further troubles in N- E of Surrey appointed

Cornish Reb 1497

A

Bc of demand for extra income to finance wars including ag Scot.
Very threatening 15000 men although leaderless.
Tried to exploit PW Reb from Scot
Rebs marched to London
Sup by Lord Daubeney + his troops withdrawn from Scot to Corn.
Rebs executed, rest let off… conscious of improving Anglo-Scot rels
