Effect of Acute Alcohol consumption Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is the alcohol priming effect?
the increase in alcohol seeking behaviour is caused by alcohol administration
persons subjective craving of alcohol also increases
What did Duka et al say about the alcohol priming effect?
that it’s dose dependent
What are 2 causal factors in drug seeking behaviour?
1 - increase in salience (prominance) of drug related cues
2- failure to exercise control over behaviours
What is impaired response inhibition control?
the inability to inhibit a moto response that as already been initiated
What are the 3 ways the measure impaired response inhibition control?
1- Stop signal task
2- Go/No-Go task
3- Stroop task
Weafer and Filmore (2008) - study (Go/No-Go)
1st condition = Go/No-Go task
2nd part = asked ppts to consume as much beer as they wanted, cover story of ‘taste test’
Weafer and Filmore (2008) findings
found task in first condition was positively correlated with amount of beer consumed in second condition
How would you measure attentional bias?
using visual probe task
What is the visual probe task?
where ppt shown two images side by side
one alcohol related, one neutral
ppts eye movement recorded as images are on screen
According to Field et al (2009) what is the correlation like between attentional bias and craving?
significant but also a weak correlation
According to Price et al (2016) what is performance on Go/No-Go task a significant predictor of?
snack intake
Strack & Deutsch (2004) - dual process model
that behaviour is determined by 2 parallel systems:
- reflective
- impulsive
What is meant by reflective system in behaviour?
it operates based on values and goals e.g health goals
What is meant by impulsive system in behaviour?
involves reward processing and behaviours based on motivation
e.g desire to consume food
What is the calorie density of macronutrient alcohol?
high calorie density of 7.1 kcal/g
could produce a caloric surplus
Christiansen et al (2016) - study (Stroop)
stroop task
alcohol versus placebo
after task, given unlimited access to cookies
Christiansen et al (2016) - findings
alcohol condition had slower reaction time on stroop task and consumed more cookies than placebo condition
Gough et al (2021) study - acute food consumption
ppts shown food and non-food images
have to respond to colour of border surrounding each image as quick as possible
Gough et al (2021) - conclusions
slower reaction time suggests greater engagement with image because its desired
What does acute alcohol consumption increase appetitive responses to?
alcohol cues and food cues
What brain regions does Acute alcohol consumption influence?
reward-related brain regions - opioid snd dopaminergic systems
