Effects on technological developments Flashcards
(13 cards)
Manufacturing impact on society
the industrial revolutions meant new types of workers were needed. Populations exploded so products were needed fast. Time consuming one off production was replaced with mass produced products. Things on obtainable by the rich were now available to working class
Manufacturing impact on society later on
modern mass consumer society and throw away culture is more common - people’s wants are satisfied by a stream of new products. Living standards improved and so did demand for new products. Advertising/market research was used to sell new products. Aesthetics were now also important and teenagers became a new market after the war.
Targeting children as consumers
children are targeted by marketing to stimulate consumerism at a young age and more things are targeted at children
Key marketing strategies used on children
kids growing older younger - playing jobs/kitchen/working
collecting - releasing more to make people want to buy new sets
culture of cool - plays on desire to be accepted by owning cool brands
Built-in obsolesce definition and why used
companies design products to fail or not update after a certain period, stimulates consumer demand
Mass production effect on employments
cheap mass-produced products have allowed most people to have access to jobs, however, highly skilled crafts people and lower skilled less have been replaced by mechanised factories. Leading to poverty and loss of jobs currently and historically
Forms of obsolescence and examples of each
technological (mobile phones), postpones (releasing a product even though technology allows for a better product - video games), physical (ink cartridges, light bulbs), style (fashion and trends)
CIM definition and advantages
computer integrated manufacturing - links CAD, CAM, robotics and machine manufacturing
AD - uninterrupted operations, quality assurance, automated assembly
CIM effects
product designers are able to drastically reduce development and manufacturing times. On demand manufacturing allows for right amount of products for clients. Designs can be digitally shown.
How has high technology production changed our lives
developments in materials, advancements in manufacturing technologies, changes in lifestyles
What opened the door to new technology
microprocessors allow more circuitry to be included on microchip, increases functionality, increases power, better battery technology
Miniaturisation of technology - where seen and what has allowed this
advanced integrated circuits - allow for more circuitry, increasing power and function. Advanced battery - lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, lightweight so more energy in smaller cells. Advanced liquid crystal displays (LCD) - colour screens which are brighter and thinner with less current so more efficiency
