What are the 8 reasons to stop a train in an emergency?
Damage to structures or earthworks above or below the line
Animal - large within the boundary
Fire
Track defect
Lights out on an emergency indicator
Obstruction
Animal - small animal on or near the line
Floor
How do you structure a call in an emergency?
This is an emergency call
Clarify who you are speaking to
Give name role employer
Give location
State if you need emergency services
State nature of the call
Request what action you require
Give your phone number
Follow any instructions given
How would you stop a train in an emergency?
Raise both arms above your head or showing a red flag
In the dark, shining a red light or any other colour light violently
When should the conductor carry out emergency protection?
When the driver incapacitated, the line is obstructed and you cannot contact the signaller or the signaller cannot provide signal protection
What are the steps in emergency protection?
Place TCOC in every obstructed line, including yours if you have derailed
Show a hand danger signal to any train approaching the obstruction
Protect the line with detonators
When are detonators used for?
Used to alert drivers of a hazard on the line ahead
Must be atleast 10 detonators in each cab (20 per train)
Checked the first week in September by the maintence team
Life span is 5 years
How far away should you place detonators?
Atleast 1 and a quarter miles
When should you put detonators down before the mile and a quarter mark?
If a train is approaching
Tunnels
Telephone
Signal box
Trailing point / junction
What should be the distance between detonators?
20 metres
How far away should you be from a detonator when it goes off?
30 metres
If the mile and a quarter falls in a tunnel, what do you do?
Put detonators at the start and the end of the tunnel
What do you do with your detonators if you hit a point in the track?
Put detonators on the junction and then Choose your line, complete a mile and a quarter and add detonators as normal and then travel back to the other line and add detonators to this line too
What does TCOC stand for
Track circuit operating clips
What are TCOCs used for?
Indicate that the line is occupied
Are they in every train?
Yes, should be 2 sets in each cab
How much can TCOC be used?
Only once
When can you remove a TCOC from the running rail?
Once instructed by the signaller
How do you add a TCOC to the line?
Furthest away line from the conductor rail and then closest line so this will not touch the conductor rail
What does PICEE stand for?
Person in charge of electrical emergency
When do you become the PICEE?
When requesting the overhead line to be turned off, this will be confirmed by the ECO or signaller
Who should arrive once you have turned the overhead line off?
The rail incident officer (RIO)
When the RIO arrives, do you keep responsibility?
No they take over responsibility but you have to confirm this with the ECO and the RIO has too aswell before you leave the site
When do we request an emergency switch off?
If someone is in danger of coming in contact or does contact the overhead line
Or
An incident or other emergency requiring / likely to require the electrical supply to be switched off
