Controller of site safety
When is the COSS appointed?
When 2 or more people are working on or near the line
What is the COSS responsible for?
The controller of site safety is responsible for setting up a safe system of work to ensure nobody is out in danger by trains or electrification
Is the COSS responsible for walking to and from the site of work?
Yes, the safe system must cover walking to and from the site of work
What are the safe systems used?
Train operated warning system (tows)
Look out operated warning system (lows)
Automatic track warning system (ATWS)
Peewee
Look out for warning signs using flags, horns, whistle and touch
When should you keep to the safe system to work?
When a train is approaching; move to a position of safety and acknowledge of warning
Not leave a position of safety until the COSS says so
Must be atleast 20m away from anyone else on or near the line to avoid distraction
Never distract a look out
