What are the hazards on the railway?

What PPE requirements are required?
A northern branded hi viz (clean)
Safety shoes
Bump cap & safety goggles if at depo
What do you not wear?
Hood
Sunglasses
Earphones
Anything red, green or yellow
Can you use your mobile devise on the line?
No
Mobile phones must be on silent, do not use it on the line and only use it when you are in a position of safety or in an emergency
What are the components of the track?
Sleepers
Ballast
Running tail
Fastening
What do the components do on the track?
Running rail is what the track wheels run on
Sleepers support the running rail and keep correct distance apart
Fastening hold the running rail to sleepers
Ballast keeps the track in place
What are the points and the meaning of the track?
Facing allows you to leave the main line
Trailing allows you to join the main line
What do mile post do and how often do you see them?
Help identify your location and they are posted every quarter of a mile
What is the definition on or near the line?
On the line itself
Within 3 metres of the nearest running rail without any permanent fence or structure
Within 1.25 metres of a platform edge and you are carrying out engineering or technical work
What is the definition of landslide?
You are between the railway boundary and the area called on or near the line
This does not include being on a station platform
What is the position of safety of a train going 0-100 and 101-125?
0-100 = 1.25m
101-125 = 2m
How far away should equipment be from the running rail?
Equipment should be atleast 2 metres away from a running line
Can a train pass a signal at danger?
Yes trains can pass signals at danger under instruction however they have to be going 50mph
Can we always assume a train has stopped at a red signal?
Never assume trains have stopped because there is a red signal
