How does the thyroid function in pregnancy?
Hypothalamus secretes TRH which goes to the anterior pituitary causing it to secrete TSH. This TSH goes to the thyroid causing secretion of T3 and T4
What does HCG do to thyroid hormones?
Reduces TSH and therefore T3/4
Why do foetuses need a thyroid?
Growth and development
What is hypopthyroidism?
Lower thyroid requiring thyroid replacement
What are signs of over hypothyroidism?
High TSH
Low fT4
What is subclinical hypothyroidism?
High TSH normal FT4
What is subclinical hypothyroidism associated with?
Stillbirth, placental abruption, pre-eclampsia and preterm delivery
What is gestational diabetes?
Diabetes when pregnant
What are risk factors for gestational diabetes?
BMI, age, ethnicity
How is gestational diabetes managed?
Lifestyle and diet
Insulin
