Q

how is energy created?

A

-ATP molecules broken down into ADP molecules and energy is released
-energy is created by breaking one of the high energy phosphate bonds
-for this to happen an enzyme is needed

Q

what happens when energy is released?

A

-an ADP molecule+ a free phosphate remain
-body only stores limited amounts of ATP
-ATP needs to be continuously produced
-ADP+free phospahte need to ‘re-join’
-

Q

how do carbs play a part in energy?

A

-carbs=glucose
-body preffered fuel
-provided rapid energy source
-stored in body as glycogen

Q

how do fats play a part in energy?

A

-fats=fatty acids
-an efficent, energy dense fuel source
-contains 2x as much energy per gram as carbs or protein
-stored as triglycerides

Q

how does protein play a part in energy?

A

-protein=amino acids
-very rarely used as energy source
-must be processed in the liver to change structure before it can be used

Q

what does metabolism mean?

A

physical and chemical process that takes place in the body to maintain the breakdown of substances to provide energy and the synthesis of others to build tissues or re-supply energy levels
