Language - pronouns contrast - “They must be thinking that you’re very clever,”

A

There is a contrast in pronouns between “you” and “they” as the poet is switching between his own perspective and an omniscient readers viewpoint. This emphasises they are adversaries not true friends. The boy is also ignorant of the gangs intentions.

A

The caesura emphasises the change in mood to something less friendly and the adjective “cold” is negative and implies a lack of emotional warmth in the group of boys.

A

The imperative verb places the reader in the middle of the game and it makes it seem like the speaker is trying to advise the boy as they directly address him with actions.

Structure - caesura - “The darkening garden watches. Nothing stirs.”

A

An End stop and caesura is used her as it creates an ominous, suspenseful atmosphere and it slows the pace down for the reader as the boy is slowing coming to realise the situation he has been left in.
