Declarative sentence - “There never is enough water.”
Water is a simple need that they have been searching for all their life. This simple declarative sentence emphasises how water is a basic need and it presents it as a fact as the people accept the fact there is never enough water.
Language - metaphorical - “The voice of a kindly god.”
It suggests that water is an act of divine mercy and kindness linking to the title of the poem, water is a blessing.
Structure - Caesura - “Sometimes, the sudden rush of fortune.”
The caesura is used here to show how refreshing the water is and anticipates the water that is going to burst from the pipe.
Language - juxtaposition/metaphor - “naked children screaming in the liquid sun,”
The metaphor of “liquid sun” shows how the sun and the water are both necessary for life. Connotes light shining through water. The juxtaposition suggests the vitality and beauty and renewal features of the water.
Language - sibilance - “The small splash,”
Sibilants is used here to show how little water there is left and it shows how much they are craving the water to quench their thirst.
