“He cooked like a person dancing” - simile
A simile is used here and it is humorous to lighten up the mood in this dark poem. He is almost and graceful as he cooks.
“Writing deposit slips and checks” - semantic field
A financial semantic field is used here as he’s responsible with money because they haven’t got a lot.
“He taught me” - repetition
This is repeated because she looks up to her father as she praises him and she is greatful for her fathers teachings.
“Heart of me weeps” - personification
It signifies him getting emotionally affected so much it’s affecting his heart internally.
“With the great black piano appassionato.” - caesura
Caesura after ‘appassionato’ contrasts the present with the past - the women singing with his past childhood.
