English homework p9 Flashcards
(5 cards)
“Looking as if she were alive.” - language
This is sinister and it implies she is dead as there is no grief evident on the dukes part as the reader wonders how she died.
“As they would ask me, if they durst” - language
He is superior to everyone else and he won’t let anyone dare glance at the painting. He feels like everyone else thirsts over his wealth and land.
“But who passed without much the same smile?” - language
This rhetorical question emphasises that it’s not up to anyone else to see her smile as he is possessive. He is jealous that she treats everybody to the same smile that she’s given him - he’s not unique or special to her.
“Will’t please you rise?” - structure
The caesura is used here to show how the duke is trying to move the conversation away from any uncomfortable questions about how she died. This increases the reader’s suspicion that he was involved in her death.
“She had a heart too soon made glad?” - language
This reveals that she had a short
life and that the duke was jealous and possessive of her as he wanted her to only be please by him as she is too easily pleased by others.
