English homework p7 Flashcards
(5 cards)
Structure - refrain - “O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms”
The refrain emphasises the poor distressed state of the knight and illustrates the speakers concerns for the knight.
Language - imagery - “I see a lily on thy brow”
The flowery imagery shows the knight is being seduced and the flower symbolises the deathly paleness of the knight’s white brow. He has lost his colour and vitality.
Language - sibilance - “And sure in language strange she said”
The sibilance creates a sinister undertone and the hissing sound connotes the snake in the garden of Eden and temptation.
Structure - “Ah! woe betide!” - caesura
The caesura is the turning point when the knight realises he has become her victim.
Language - assonance - “With horrid warning gapèd wide”
The assonance emphasises the horrors of their warning and is trying to warn the knight of the lady’s power and its effects.
