English homework p8 Flashcards
(5 cards)
Language - metaphor - “the marriage of true minds”
This is metaphorical and it refers to two people dedicated to one another.
Structure - caesura - “let me not to the marriage of true minds”
The caesura is used here to slow down the pace of the poem for a more sensual feeling and it emphasises the barrier that should not exist between lovers.
Language - metaphor - “It is the star to every wand’ring bark”
This is metaphorical and means that love is like the pole star which was a symbol of constancy because it was believed to never move in the sky. Love is constant and unchanging throughout the journey of life.
Structure- exclamatory sentence - “O no!”
The exclamative sentence reflects the speakers certainty about what love isn’t and what love should be.
Language - sibilance - “within his bending sickle’s compass come;”
The sibilance mimics the sound of a sickle moving through the air and relates to the grim reaper and death which contrast with the topic of life and love in this poem.
