enzymes- (2.10-2.14B) Flashcards
(4 cards)
What are enzymes
biological catalysts which speed up the rate of reactions
how do enzymes work
the substrate and enzyme collide
the substrate binds to the active site
producing an enzyme substrate complex
once the reaction is complete, the products do not fit the active site as well as the substrate, so they are released.
How does temperature affect an enzyme reaction
the enzyme and substrate have more kinetic energy
they move faster, so there are more kinetic energy. this is best at optimum temperature
if the temperature gets too high, the active side denatures, and there is too much kinetic energy, so the enzymes can’t bind to the substrates
explain the effect of changing pH on an enzyme controlled reaction
-pH changes from optimum
-pH denatures enzymes
-substrate and enzyme no longer fit
