Evolutionary Change 4 Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
What is adaptive evolutionary change ?
A
Changes in a populations genetic makeup over generations they improve the organisms ability to survive and reproduce in their environment.
It is not random.
2
Q
Describe some everyday examples of adaptive evolutionary change
A
- Insecticide resistance in head lice
- Warfarin resistance in rats
- Antibiotic resistance in bacteria
3
Q
What are selectively neutral genes ?
A
Genes that do not affect an organisms fitness, so they have no impact on survival of reproduction
They are not influenced by natural selection, they are random changes that occur.
4
Q
What are some examples of selectively neutral phenotypic traits ?
A
- Markings on clover leaves
- Markings on cone shells
They seem to have no adaptive significance
