Origins Of Life 4 Flashcards
(6 cards)
What defines a semi-autonomous organelle ?
- Specific function
- Circular DNA genome
- Transcription/translation machinery
- Distinct biogenesis pathway
- Self replicates by binary fission
Name examples of “semi autonomous” organelles ?
- Mitochondria
- Chloroplasts
What is the endosymbiosis theory ?
A theory that explains the origin of mitochondria and chloroplasts as formerly free-living prokaryotes engulfed by ancestral eukaryotes, forming a mutualistic relationship and eventually becoming organelles.
What was the original event of endosymbiosis?
Mitochondria
What evidence is there for the Endosymbiosis Theory?
- Double membrane and size are similar to prokaryotes
- Circular genome
- Complex protein import system
- Genetic homology between organelle genes and bacterial genes
What other organelles can be explained by the Endosymbiosis Theory?
Possibly: Golgi, ER, peroxisomes and nucleus
Methanogens and fermenting heterotrophs established metabolic partnerships.
Gene transfer and membrane specialisation followed
