What is a Contusion?
Bruise; skin is not broken.
- pain, swelling and discoloration
What is Ecchymosis?
Bluish discoloration of the skin; caused by blood in the subcutaneous tissue
- From trauma to underlying blood vessels
What is Petechiae?
Tiny red or purple spots on the skin
What is an Abrasion?
Scraping away of skin.
What is Laceration?
Irregular tear of the skin, torn jagged wound
What is Pruritus? What can cause it?
Pruritus = Itching
Can be caused by:
- Hyperthyroidism,
- Drug sensitivity
What is Urticaria? What can cause it
Red, elevated patches; hives
- due to an allergic response to a drug/infection
What is a Rash?
Local redness and eruption of the skin, with itching
Seen in inflammation. Vasomotor Disturbances
What is Xeroderma?
Excessive Dryness of the skin
What is Digital Clubbing?
Thickened and rounded nail end
What is Cyanosis, what does it indicate?
Slightly blue, gray discoloration of the skin
- Indicative of lack of oxygen
- look at lips, nails, hands and feet
What is Pallor, what can it indicate?
Paleness; lack of color
- indicate anemia,
- temporary pallor seen with arterial insufficiency and syncope
What is Jaundice? What can it indicate?
Yellowing of the skin; indicates liver disease
What does brown skin indicate?
Increase pigmentation, sometimes associated with venous insufficiency
What is Hirsutism?
Male pattern hair growth in women
