What is Impetigo?
Bacterial Infection; caused by staph or strep.
Associated with inflammation; small pus-filled vesicles and itching.
Is impetigo contagious?
YES; common in children in elderly.
What is Cellulitis?
Bacterial infection; poor defined borders and widespread.
- Skin is hot, red and edematous
Who is at risk of developing cellulitis?
Elderly and individuals with diabetes, wounds or malnutrition.
What is an Abscess?
Bacterial Infection
Cavity containing pus, surrounded by inflamed tissue as a result of a local infection
What is Herpes 1 (Herpes Simplex)
Viral Infection
Vesicular eruption of the face or mouth cold sore or fever blister
What is Herpes 2
Viral Infection
Vesicular genital eruption; spread by sexual contact
What is Herpes Zoster? (Shingles)
Viral Infection; caused by chickenpox reactivation of the virus laying dormant
Pain, tingling and red papules/vesicles along the dermatome of a nerve.
Is Herpes Zoster contagious?
Yes, if a person has not had chicken pox before.
What is Postherpetic Neuralgic pain?
Pain secondary to Herpes Zoster infection.
pain that can be intermittent or constant, lasting weeks or intractable pain last months or years.
What are Warts?
Viral infection; Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
- Transmitted via direct contact; autoinoculation possible
- Common on the skin of hands and fingers
What is Tinea Corporis
Ringworm; fungal infection
- Forms ring-shaped patches
- Itchy; transmitted via direct contact
What is Tinea Pedis?
Athlete’s Foot; fungal infection
- Fungal infection of the foot; especially between toes
- redness, inflammation, pruritus
What is Scabies?
(Mites); parasitic infection
- Burrow into skin; causing inflammation; itching and possible pruritus
What is Lice?
(Pediculosis); parasitic infection
- Parasite affecting the head, body, genital area
- Leaves bite marks, redness
